//pay-for-print tutorial

Logging In

STEP 01: Go to https://payforprint.ubc.ca/user to begin using pay for print, you can either do this from your own laptop or from one of the work stations in studio.

STEP 02: In the username section type your CWL with “.stu” afterwards and then enter your CWL password. If its your first time using the service click “please click here” and you may need to update your password, however after doing this you can change it back to your original CWL password. UBC has some silly protocols sometimes.

STEP 03: After doing this you will arrive at the Pay for Print home page. Here you can review print jobs, add money to your UBCcard, and submit new jobs for printing.

You will not be able to print without money added on your card so please make sure to add some cash before beginning.

Choosing Print Settings

STEP 04: To begin printing, click on “Web Print” in the menu on the left side of the page.

STEP 05: Click “Submit a Job>>”

STEP 06: Scroll down the page until you see items under the printer name with “sala\sala…” and select what type and size you are trying to print for this specific document.

You can only print on 8.5″x11″ or 11″x17″ paper through Pay for Print. For all other large printing see: //plotting tutorial

After choosing which size, colour or B&W (Black and White), and single sided / double sided click the “Print Options and Account Selection>>” button in the lower right.

Uploading Documents

STEP 07: Click “Upload Documents>>”

Click “Upload from computer” this will navigate you through your hard drive so you can select the file you would like to print. You can also drag and drop files here.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to save your file to PDF format at the exact paper size, orientation, and scale you wish to print it at before uploading. Pay for Print is dumb and does not and will not intelligently scale / orient your document for you. Use your own brain.

STEP 08: Once you see your file on the screen uploaded, click “Upload & Complete>>”.

Your file is now uploaded and ready to send to a printer.

Printing your file

STEP 09: Next you can either click the green text saying “Held in a queue” or navigate to the menu on the left side of the page and click “Jobs Pending Release”

STEP 10: If you think you’re all good to go click “print”. If you’re not click “cancel” and try again.

STEP 11: Make sure you select the correct printer for the job in the correct building. No sense in running across campus to grab your print from MacMillan or Lasserre for no reason. Then click the green name for the corresponding printer. If the printer is running properly its status should say “OK” in the right hand column.

After this your print has been sent out into the magical ether and cross your fingers that you did it correctly.

Commonly Asked Questions

  • Why isn’t my print working?
    • You may need to give it some time, or the printing queue is backed up with other peoples print jobs
    • The printer may be out of paper, please contact the plotter tech for your respective building
  • What do I do if a printer isn’t working?
    • You can contact one of the plotter techs with the information or sometimes you can use a work around. For example if you’re trying to print in B&W but the B&W printer isn’t working. You can go back to STEP 06 and set your print type as B&W, when you get to STEP 11 click on the Colour Printer instead and it will still be able to print your job as normally.
  • I want to print on a different type of paper than the standard letter stock, is that possible?
    • Yes it is possible, but if you are planning on doing this, please let one of the plotter tech’s know and schedule a time for them to do this with you. Do not mess with the printers or plotters yourself as they often get broken by students attempting to do things without asking. Please also recognize that the plotters and printers are often under heavy use around different studio deadlines. If you are planning on doing some special type of printing, you need to do this well in advance of those busy times, or in the evening/early morning.
